India’s operators embrace IoT

The enterprise arm of Indian operator Vodafone Idea, also known as Vi, has strengthened its IoT portfolio with the launch of what it calls integrated IoT solutions for enterprises.

According to Indian media reports, this offering comprises connectivity, hardware, network, application, analytics, security and support.

Vi says its IoT offering is transforming the way businesses operate by reinventing processes, operations and customer experience and developing newer business models and revenue opportunities.

With its integrated IoT solutions, Vi says it aims to adopt a consulting-led engagement to support businesses in identifying their needs and designing and developing the right IoT solution and implementation. It will provide them with a tailored solution to be integrated with a best-in-class enterprise-grade IoT framework.

Vi also claims to be the largest IoT player in India. However, it is not the only one.

Bharti Airtel has already launched its 5G-ready IoT platform with the capability, we are told, to connect and manage billions of devices and applications. Airtel is targeting automobiles, manufacturing, utilities and industry 4.0 verticals to drive growth for its IoT platform and the IoT business as a whole.

These, we can expect, will also be target markets for Vi. However, there’s further competition. Reliance Jio has also developed a comprehensive IoT solution with device, diagnostics, connectivity, platform and support. Indian media reports say it is in advanced talks and trials with original equipment makers (OEMs) to launch its IoT services in the country.

However these initiatives turn out, one thing is clear: IoT connectivity is expected to grow massively in the coming years and operators in a market the size of India don’t want to be left behind.
