Indian conglomerate Tata Group is reportedly in talks to partner with Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Pegatron to set up an iPhone factory in India, as Apple aims to shift its reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
Sources speaking to Reuters, said the assembly plant is being built by Tata in Hosur City in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
Pegatron was said to be providing the technical and engineering support required for the plant. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the proportion of iPhones made in India will reach between 20%-25% this year, up from 12%-14% in 2023.
The Tata and Pegatron plant is rumoured to have 20 assembly lines for iPhones, and the Indian company would hold a majority stake in the JV.
Tata has an iPhone factory in the southern state of Karnataka, which it bought from Taiwanese company Wistron last year.
Pegatron already operates an iPhone assembly plant in India and is in talks to add a second facility, and accounts for 10% of iPhones manufactured, with the rest made by Foxconn, reported Reuters.
