Vodafone Hungary is boosting its 5G network in Budapest with the addition of around 200 new base stations.
The network expansion will afford 5G access to “hundreds of thousands” of potential subscribers across “almost the entire area of the capital”, according to a statement from the operator.
Vodafone obtained 5G-capable 3500MHz spectrum at auction in 2016, and TeleGeography notes that the operator first launched commercial services in central Budapest in October 2019. By mid-2020, its network featured 34 active 5G base stations.
The expansion will use both 3500MHz spectrum and 700MHz frequencies that it won at auction in March 2020. The validity period for these airwaves began in September 2020, and Vodafone has stated its foal of switching on 300 5G base stations before the end of the year across Budapest and its outlying areas, as well as the cities of Debrecen, Eger, Gyor, Miskolc, Pecs, Szeged and Szekesfehervar.
