A1 switches on Bulgarian 5G network

A1 Bulgaria’s 5G network is now live in the country’s capital of Sofia.

The 3.6GHz network can deliver 1Gbps download speeds, with its launch covering Sofia’s major residential and business districts.

The network will shortly be expanded to Bulgaria’s fourth largest city, Burgas, with A1 expecting to achieve 90% coverage there by 15th December. By the end of March 2021, A1 is aiming to expand the network to all towns in Bulgaria with a population of over 10,000.

CommsUpdate notes that Vivacom was the first operator in the market to launch a 5G offering in September 2020 covering the downtown areas of all 27 district capitals in the country, as well as the major Trakia highway. Its network refarms its spectrum holding using DSS (dynamic spectrum sharing).
