Indonesian telecommunications company PT Indosat Tbk (Indosat Ooredoo) established the 5G Experience Center in Surabaya, in partnership with Nokia, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), and the University of Oulu Finland.
The 5G Experience Center served as a center of knowledge, creativity, and excellence to boost 5G innovation, channel collaboration, and empower local digital talent, said a press release from the telecommunications provider in the Southeast Asian country.
Several key innovative projects have been developed at the 5G Experience Center by ITS students, including RAISA 5G Medical Robot as a use case for the Smart Health sector, 5G “Suroboyo Bus” Autonomous as a use case for the Smart Mobility, Mycom 5G Cloud Computing as a use case for the Smart Education, and the ARSA Fast Response Drone as a use case for the Smart Living/Smart Security, it said.
Arief Musta’in, Director & Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer of Indosat Ooredoo, said, “I am very proud of our collaboration with ITS, Nokia, and the University of Oulu Finland, in presenting the 5G Experience Center and spearheading the development of 5G ecosystem in Indonesia. We hope this initiative becomes a catalyst to boost innovation & entrepreneurship by channeling Indonesian youth to unleash the limitless future of 5G technology."
Arief added: "Through this 5G Experience Center, we are committed to developing localized, affordable, & mass-market use cases that are relevant not only to the city of Surabaya but also to Indonesia as a digital nation and we have started this commitment by opening a series of The 5G Talent Academy program which was participated by 104 participants through Design Thinking with 3D Prototype Workshop with the theme of Redesign Surabaya city with 5G for Surabaya's citizen better life experience.”
Referring to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data, Indonesia is likely to experience a demographic bonus by 2045, where the productive age population in Indonesia in that year will reach around 70 percent of the total population[1]. This demographic bonus presents an opportunity to overcome a projected shortage of 9 million skilled ICT workers by 2030[2], based on World Bank data, or approximately 600,000 digital talents per year.
The establishment of ITS 5G Experience Center seeks to contribute positively to youth and digital talent empowerment by providing exposure to global research facilities & communities, providing certification programs to become authorized professional 5G experts, and channeling for career development and entrepreneurship in the future, said the release.
