China claims rural broadband milestone

China’s state news agency Xinhua has reported that all of the nation’s administrative villages received broadband connectivity before the end of November 2021.

Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) senior official Xie Cun described the milestone has a “historic achievement in solving the communication difficulties in poor areas” that would “provide solid internet support for China’s rural vitalisation and modernisation.”

China’s Finance Ministry noted that since 2015, the government has invested over CNY22 billion (US$3.45 billion) in strengthening remote and rural communications. TeleGeography reports that the Chinese Communist Party will continue promoting digital development of rural regions by providing financial backing to infrastructure initiatives.
