With Indonesia’s government encouraging operators to quicken the pace of migrating their customers from 3G to 4G, market leader Telkomsel has confirmed plans to implement a full LTE upgrade this year on a “sustainable basis”.
As reported by CommsUpdate, Telkomsel confirmed that the deployment would be carried out in phases throughout 2022 across all regions of Indonesia, bringing its pace in line with the Ministry of Communication and Information’s planned winding down of 3G services. As its upgraded progresses, Telkomsel will allow 3G customers to switch immediately to 4G, although it did not confirm if tariffs would remain constant.
Telkomsel President Hendri Mulya Syam said that the LTE upgrade would “enable us to optimise more potential in various regions through a more accelerated cross-sector digital transformation… Upgrading all 3G services to 4G LTE is also a form of support for the government’s efforts to bring digital connectivity with excellent quality that is evenly distributed throughout the country.”
