Chile’s Entel is now offering 3.5GHz 5G coverage in Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island.
The operator’s general manager Antonio Buchi said: “The installation of the first 5G antennas in Rapa Nui fills us with pride and is the result of Entel’s commitment to deliver connectivity, reaching every corner of the country, to bring the infinite possibilities that technology offers to all Chileans.”
Rapa Nui is one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world, located in the South Pacific around 3500km from mainland Chile. TeleGeography reports that Entel has been providing services to the island since 1966, when it launched single channel HF fixed voice services. The next upgrade came in 1990 with a digital satellite link, and 2G services were launched in 2003. 3G followed in 2010, with 4G in 2016.
