Somtel claims first 5G network launch in Somalia

Somali operator Somtel has launched the country’s first 5G network.

According to local outlet Hiiraan Online, the operator’s parent company Dahabshiil Group has introduced numerous innovations in the region, including 4G/LTE, VoLTE, eSIM technology and the broadband service Bluekom Fibre.

Dahabshiil CEO Abdirashid Duale said that 5G “will be instrumental in driving speedy ICT solutions for economic growth and enriching the digital lives of all Somalis. The rapid connections enabled by 5G will unlock a world of possibilities and empower us to harness the benefits of emerging technologies.”

Hiiraan Online reports that Somtel serves millions of customers in the region, as well as providing mobile financial services via eDahab. Somtel has not specified which spectrum band it will use to provide 5G, nor outlined a coverage area.
