Philippines operator Globe Telecom and Orex SAI, Japanese operator Docomo's open RAN service brand, developed in collaboration with multiple global vendors, have announced a partnership to collaborate in the Philippines to launch a demonstration experiment for open RAN.
Orex SAI has partnered with Globe to conduct an open RAN demonstration experiment as part of the preparation for an upcoming field trial.
Japan is among the countries vigorously supporting the rollout of open RAN, an open radio access network designed to allow interconnection between equipment and systems from multiple vendors.
Open RAN, say the partners, offers new possibilities by enabling diverse suppliers to contribute to the network's innovation and optimisation. This flexibility can potentially enhance and foster more dynamic, scalable, and cost-efficient network environments.
Through the demonstration experiment, Globe says it will assess the feasibility and performance of open RAN solutions and understand the integration process within the current network infrastructure. This exploration will allow Globe to gain valuable insights into how open RAN could potentially play a role in its future network development.
Joel Agustin, Globe’s Head of Service Planning and Engineering, says Globe’s participation in this project is focused on gaining deeper insights and evaluating how open RAN technology aligns with Globe's future needs. Through the demonstration, Globe aims to contribute to the global conversation about open RAN, learning from the trial outcomes to inform future decisions on network evolution and infrastructure planning.
