More good news for Vodafone Idea has followed hard on the heels of the recent announcement that the Indian government has expanded its ownership stake in the operator. This time it involves a network upgrade supported by tech giant Nokia.
Nokia has announced that it will upgrade and expand the Vodafone Idea optical transport network across key metro and circle (administrative areas) locations in India. The upgrade, which utilises Nokia’s optical switching technology, will increase the operator’s capacity, supporting 4G data growth.
In addition, says Nokia, its equipment will modernise the network, providing flexibility and efficiency, and boost Vodafone Idea’s 5G rollout.
Among what Nokia calls a comprehensive optical suite of products deployed to enable this network overhaul are its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform, and its CDC-F 2.0 wavelength switching technologies.
In addition, Nokia will also deploy its photonic service engine (PSE-Vs) super-coherent optics, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and optical transport network (OTN) to ensure Vodafone Idea’s customers continue to experience great connectivity even during peak usage times.
Nokia’s future-ready solution will also enable Vodafone Idea to efficiently scale its network from C-band to C+L band (thus expanding the usable spectrum) as required, avoiding the need for any forklift changes in platform or architecture.
This deployment will, it is claimed, lead to reduced operational costs for Vodafone Idea. Additionally, says Nokia, the project prioritises sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient solutions and automation-enabled deployment processes to minimise the carbon footprint.
