Claro Colombia aims to upgrade 10,000 antennas by the end of 2028

Claro Colombia, a leading mobile telecommunications operator with more than 40 million users, has announced that it is implementing the modernisation of its more than 10,000 antennas nationwide.

Claro will work to upgrade more than 1,000 of its antennas in the country this year, simplifying its hardware and modernising key components such as the baseband, power amplifiers and antennas. It expects to have modernised all of its antennas by the end of 2028.

As well as improving customer experience and increasing the efficiency of its infrastructure, the company aims to reduce its impact on the environment.

Rodrigo de Gusmao, President of Claro Colombia, explains: “Our commitment is to offer our users the best possible experience, with expanded 5G coverage, faster speeds, and exceptional service stability. At the same time, we are modernising our infrastructure with simplified and more efficient hardware, which translates into a smaller carbon footprint for our operations.”

Implementation to date is claimed to have resulted in significant increases in data traffic of more than 25%, while significant adoption of 5G technology has been achieved, with 33% of total traffic in each area already using the new technology, and a 21% improvement in energy efficiency in the modernised base stations.

The update is also enabling the integration of multiple technologies in the same infrastructure, from 2G to 5G, offering greater capacity and efficiency with a smaller equipment deployment. This means Claro customers will experience higher quality of service and superior stability in their voice and data connections. In addition, says Claro, the deployment of its 5G network will accelerate significantly, reaching 60% of all Claro antennas in Colombia by 2028.
