Airtel brings 4G to smartphones in Kolkata

Bharti Airtel has now launched 4G/LTE services in Kolkata for certain smartphones.

Previously, the service was only accessible in Kolkata via data cards, but it can now be accessed via a number of devices, including the Xolo LT 900, LG G2, Apple iPhone 5S and 5C. In order to use the services, Airtel subscribers must upgrade their existing SIM to a 4G SIM.

Airtel claims that the service will enable high definition video streaming with zero buffering, allowing users to download movies and upload photos extremely quickly.

Currently only data browsing will make use of the 4G network, with voice calls being rerouted onto the operator’s 2G network via CSFB (circuit switched fall back) technology. Airtel’s 4G services have been available in Kolkata via data cards for 2 years.
