Nextel debuts 4G network in Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian operator Nextel has launched 4G/LTE services in Rio de Janeiro, allowing subscribers access to download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G.

The launch comes less than a year after the operator began offering 3G services in the city. Nextel is providing 4G services in 19 regions of the city using the 1.8GHz frequency band, which requires fewer antenna installations due to its greater signal range.

A 4G pricing plan known as the Smart Plan 400 will accompany the launch, providing 4GB of data, 400 local minutes to any carrier, unlimited SMS, national roaming and free evening calls – all for R$129.99.

Nextel has also upgraded its 3G network in São Paulo, allowing for data transmission that is up to 3 times faster than regular 3G.
