Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka (Hutch Lanka) and the Sri Lankan Board of Investments have signed a deal to deploy a 4G network across the island nation.
With a value of at least $115 million, the agreement will allow Hutch Lanka to further integrate its network with that of Etisalat Lanka, which it acquired in December last year.
Thirukumar Nadarasa, CEO of Hutch Lanka, noted that the first phase of its national 4G deployment was underway following the launch of 4G services in the Western Province, in which the capital Colombo is situated.
Nadarasa stated that combining Hutch Lanka’s network with Etisalat Lanka’s would “provide Sri Lankan customers with a major boost in both rural and urban network coverage and a renewed commitment in offering superior communication services to all customers.”
Following its merger with Etisalat Lanka, Hutch Lanka is the country’s third largest mobile operator, with Dialog Axiata and Mobitel (Sri Lanka Telecom) taking first and second place. Its market share is around 20%.
