MTS is continuing its cooperation with Ericsson as it looks to modernise its network infrastructure in preparation for the advent of 5G.
The operator, which is Russia’s largest by subscribers, is overhauling its 2G, 3G and 4G infrastructure in 16 regions of the Central Federal District, which surrounds Moscow.
Under the new agreement, Ericsson will deliver Radio System products and solutions to “several thousand” sites in MTS’ footprint, with the Swedish vendor noting that “the project will continue until 2026.”
MTS expects its modernisation program to boost its network’s capacity and performance, allowing for a faster rollout of 5G services using its current infrastructure and spectrum. Ericsson will allow the operator to switch on 5G technology via remotely installed spectrum sharing software.
Ericsson’s portfolio is augmented by integrated AI solutions that use predictive analytics to boost network performance and reduce critical incidents. Russia’s telecom authorities have not yet issued licences for commercial 5G mobile spectrum, nor are operators currently allowed to deploy 5G using their existing holdings.
