Claro launches 700MHz 4G in Colombia

Claro Colombia has started deploying its 700MHz 4G network in Bogota and Ciudad Salitre.

As reported by CommsUpdate, the operator has installed 30 base transceiver stations (BTS) in these cities and will shortly expand its network to Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Cali, Cartagena, Medellin, Rionegro and Villavicencio.

Colombia’s government held a multiband spectrum auction in December 2019, during which Claro obtained both a 20MHz block of 700MHz spectrum and 30MHz of 2500MHz spectrum.

The operator is also preparing to trial 5G services using a block of 3.5GHz spectrum that it was allocated in June 2020 for this purpose. The non-commercial trials will take place in Barrancabermeja, Cali and Medellin.

It has already conducted a 5G test in Bogota, achieving download speeds of 864Mbps and upload speeds of 103Mbps.
