Bharti Airtel’s board has approved a proposed restructuring of the operator’s business to shift its focus towards digital initiatives.
Under the new plan, Bharti Airtel will operate four core business units: Digital, India, Infrastructure, and International. Airtel Digital will become part of the listed Bharti Airtel entity, assuming control of assets such as Airtel Cloud, Airtel Secure, Airtel X Stream and Mitra Payments.
A newly created unit to be known as Airtel will house all of the group’s telecom businesses. This will eventually include direct-to-home services unit Bharti Telemedia, but for the time being this subsidiary will remain separate.
Airtel Payments Bank, Indus Towers and infrastructure business Nxtra will also continue to operate as separate subsidiaries. Bharti Airtel’s international units and affiliates will similarly not be affected by the restructure.
Chairman Sunil Mittal said that the focus on the four key units would “provide agility, expertise and operational rigour to serve our customers brilliantly while providing flexibility to unlock value for our shareholders.”
