Lebanese diesel shortage shuts down Ogero services

Lebanon’s state-owned provider Ogero confirmed that it is unable to offer connectivity in three locations until further notice, since no diesel is available to fuel electricity generators.

Local outlet the961.com cited a statement from Ogero on 16th August as saying: “Our services have stopped temporarily within the range of the Barouk, Halba and Qoubayat centres until we are resupplied with diesel fuel. We apologise for this circumstance that is beyond our control.”

CommsUpdate notes that the statement was issued at around the same time as a separate announcement by fuel distribution representative Fadi Abou Chakra.

The representative noted that several diesel fuel tankers were moored offshore in Lebanese waters, unable to disburse their cargo due to complications around fuel subsidies. As a result, the Lebanese market received no diesel fuel for distribution on Monday.

Power outages – and consequently internet blackouts – have become a routine occurrence in several regions of Lebanon this year. In June, Ogero chairman Imad Kreidieh stated that the ongoing power shortages would inhibit the provision of internet services.
