Airtel Kenya renews licence after reaching settlement

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has approved Airtel Kenya’s application to replace its temporary licence with a new 10-year permit for 2×10MHz of spectrum in the 2100MHz band.

CommsUpdate reports that Airtel has agreed to pay US$10 million for the concession, and will separately pay the regulator US$20 million across the next three years as part of its settlement of a longstanding licensing dispute with the CA.

We previously reported that Airtel Kenya had reached an out of court settlement with the CA over its use of Essar’s operating licence following its partial acquisition of the unit. Airtel Africa has now confirmed that the details of the agreement are accurate.
