Ethio Telecom launches 5G network

State-owned operator Ethio Telecom has officially expanded its commercial 5G network in southern Ethiopia, as the operator continues to deploy fifth-generation technology.

In a statement, the operator explained it is launching 5G to meet rising connectivity demands from customers, improve service quality, and enhance reliability.

The new 5G service will be available in the city of Hawassa, specifically in the following locations: Piasa, the Ethio Telecom building, Fiker Haik, Wolde Amanuel Dubale Square, Wanza (the former bus station), Saint Gabriel Cathedral Square, the Southern Region Finance Office, Holy Trinity Church, and Haile Resort.

Enterprises and consumers in these areas will gain access to speeds of up to 10Gbps, 1-millisecond ultra-low latency, and high-quality communication, digital solutions, and financial services.

The operator also highlighted how 5G will transform sectors such as education, mining, manufacturing, and transport, and enable future technologies such as AI.

Ethio telecom launched commericial 5G services in Ethiopian capital Addis Abbaba in September 2023.
