Globe Telecom hailed the arrest of two Chinese nationals for attempting to sell pre-registered SIM cards.
The Philippine News Agency reported that the criminals violated the SIM Registration Act and were apprehended by the Philippine National Police (PNP)–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG). Around 1,700 Globe and 2,300 TM SIM cards were confiscated during the operation on January 9.
Globe’s general counsel, Froilan Castelo, stated: “We laud the PNP-CIDG for carrying out this operation, which led to a significant win against fraudsters. Let this successful police operation serve as proof that the SIM Registration Act is working and that it is a powerful tool against scammers.”
Buying or selling pre-registered SIM cards can result in imprisonment of six months to six years and/or fines ranging from PHP100,000 (US$1,700) to PHP300,000.
