MobiFone becomes Vietnam’s third 5G provider

Vietnam-based operator MobiFone has officially launched its 5G mobile services, making it the third provider to commercialise 5G in the Southeast Asian country.

In a statement from Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology, MobiFone’s 5G service will initially be available in large cities, with plans for a full nationwide deployment in the pipeline.

The 5G network operates on the 3,800MHz to 3,900MHz frequency band, utilising both 5G NSA (non-standalone) and 5G SA (standalone) architectures. The network can reach speeds of up to 1.5Gbps, which is reportedly 10 to 15 times faster than 4G in Vietnam.

Subscribers with compatible handsets using 4G SIM cards can access 5G services in coverage areas without needing a SIM swap.

MobiFone has unveiled over 100 5G solutions for enterprises in "priority sectors" to drive Vietnam’s digital transformation. These include industrial manufacturing, smart cities, energy, agriculture, healthcare, education, smart transportation, and smart tourism.

Several 5G-based solutions have already been implemented by government agencies and businesses across the country. One highlighted example is an AI-powered camera for smart tourism and traffic management, as well as a private 5G network for construction materials company Vicem Hoang Mai Cement.

Viettel and VNPT launched their 5G services in late 2024, with the former already amassing 5.5 million subscribers and the latter connecting 3.3 million.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has identified the commercialisation of 5G services as a key pillar in achieving his target of growing Vietnam’s GDP by 8%.
