Vodafone and Digi carve up Telekom Romania Mobile in €70m deal

Vodafone Romania and Digi Romania have entered binding agreements to acquire separate parts of OTE’s subsidiary Telekom Romania Mobile Communications (TKRM), reducing the number of mobile operators in the country to three.

Vodafone said it will pay €30 million for TKRM’s post-paid customer base, while Digi has agreed to pay €40 million to acquire its pre-paid customers. Both companies will also gain spectrum assets and towers as part of the transaction. Completion of the deal is expected in early October this year.

Vodafone Group CEO Margherita Della Valle said: “This transaction strengthens our position in Romania, by increasing our local scale and unlocking significant synergy benefits. It supports our strategy of building strong positions in growing markets, which enables us to invest in the high-quality networks our customers rely on.”

OTE chairman and CEO Kostas Nebis added: “We are pleased to have reached this important agreement, which is fully aligned with OTE’s strategic focus on optimising its portfolio and enhancing shareholder value.”

TKRM, or Telekom Romania, was the country’s fourth-largest operator, with a base of around 3.8 million customers at the end of its 2023 financial year, down year-on-year from 4.16 million.

Vodafone and Digi signed an MoU in November last year to divide up parts of their rival.
