Philippine operator PLDT is upgrading its digital infrastructure using optical technology from US vendor Ciena to improve data transmission from the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) system to local users.
PLDT has deployed Ciena’s 6500 platform to support the backhaul of international traffic from global cloud providers to its domestic network. The upgrade aims to boost the efficiency and reliability of data flows across the country’s backbone.
Blums Pineda, Senior Vice President and Head of Enterprise Business Group at PLDT and Smart, said the initiative is part of PLDT’s efforts to strengthen the country’s digital backbone and ensure that international capacity from the ADC system translates into improved national connectivity.
Ciena’s Vice President for Asia Pacific, Matt Vesperman, said the Philippines has become an important hub for cloud providers and enterprises expanding across Asia, and that the company’s optical solutions are helping improve connectivity for those players.
Ciena’s technology enables PLDT to manage multi-terabit traffic with low latency and high capacity between the ADC landing station and its national backbone.
The ADC system connects to PLDT’s recently launched VITRO Santa Rosa data centre, described as the country’s first AI-ready facility. The data centre, operated by PLDT’s VITRO Inc., forms part of the operator’s broader effort to expand enterprise connectivity and support digital services through its national data centre interconnect network.
