Ethio Telecom and Somcable talk cross-border partnership

Ethio Telecom said on Wednesday it has held talks with telecoms provider and ISP Somaliland Cable (Somcable) in hopes of forging a strategic cross-border digital and telecoms partnership.

Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru met with a delegation from Somcable, with discussions centred on accelerating growth in potential overseas markets through advanced digital and communication solutions, in alignment with Ethio telecom’s strategic direction.

Tamru highlighted Ethio Telecom’s institutional strengths and infrastructure capabilities, and reaffirmed the company’s readiness to collaborate with Somcable to unlock new opportunities and drive mutual, sustainable growth in alignment with the telco’s “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028” strategy.

“Collaboration is instrumental to unlocking growth. This partnership enables us to share our experience and infrastructure to create shared value and advance digital empowerment across Africa,” she said in a statement.

Somcable CEO Mohammed Ibrahim Ahmed added, “This is more than a partnership between two companies; it is a collaborative commitment to harnessing technology to unlock human potential across Ethiopia and contribute to a more connected and prosperous Africa.”

Somcable, which started operations in 2009, has landed two international subsea cables in Somaliland – the 2Africa cable and the PEACE cable, both in May 2022.
