Malaysian telecoms group Axiata has promoted Group CFO Nik Rizal to CEO and managing director, succeeding Vivek Sood after nine years with the company.
Rizal will assume the new role on June 1, with Axiata describing the move as part of a long-term succession plan. He joined the group in 2024 as CFO, bringing prior experience from major banks and energy company Shell. He also serves on the boards of several Axiata subsidiaries, including CelcomDigi, XL SMART Telecom, Robi Axiata, EDOTCO Group and PT Link Net.
Sood has held various senior roles during his nine-year tenure, serving as CEO and managing director since 2023 and previously as group CFO.
Axiata chairman Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan highlighted Rizal’s “central role” in shaping the group’s strategy and strengthening its financial discipline.
Commenting on his appointment, Rizal said he was honoured by the board’s confidence and looked forward to working closely with Sood and the wider management team to ensure continuity and a smooth leadership transition.
