Globe Telecom considering Myanmar for future expansion

Filipino operator Globe Telecom is mulling over expansion in the ASEAN (Association of SouthEast Asian Nations) region, with Myanmar under particular consideration.

The ASEAN organisation was founded by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. It has since expanded to include Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

“We will look for white space within ASEAN and Asia on where to leverage the skills we’ve developed over time,” said Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu, who went on to mention Myanmar as a market that the operator was interested in.

Cu noted that the financial services sector is underserved in Myanmar, adding that Globe is aiming to expand the reach of its mobile banking services GCash and BanKO in Southeast Asia following the ASEAN integration scheduled for next year, which aims to unite the Economic Community under a single market.
