Malaysia’s three biggest mobile operators have all renewed their 2.1GHz spectrum licences for a fee of MYR118.4 million ($30.5 million) each.
Celcom Axiata, Digi and Maxis have all been granted a further 16 years of validity for their 3G licences by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), commencing from 2nd April this year.
Digi holds 2x15MHz in the 2.1GHz band, while Maxis holds 2x15MHz of FDD spectrum and 1x5MHz of TD spectrum. Celcom Axiata holds various blocks in the 1950MHz to 1965MHz and 2140MHz to 2155MHz bands.
The MCMC is lining up the sale of eight 2x5MHz blocks in the 700MHz band, and has received bids from operators. The airwaves are currently only available for analogue broadcasting services but will open up for mobile services from 1st January 2019.
