AIS and CAT Telecom sign tower leaseback deal to end spat

Thai operators AIS and CAT have signed a five-year sale and lease deal covering 155 towers, bringing a longstanding disagreement to a close.

The THB186 million ($5.9 million) deal will see AIS use the towers on lease from CAT as well as providing maintenance for the infrastructure. The operators agreed to the arrangement following arbitration.

Valid from 1st July until September 2025, the deal also factors in compensation for expenses incurred during the dispute between the two parties, which saw CAT Telecom seeking THB860 million through the Civil Court.

The dispute arose over a concession deal that included a clause requiring AIS to transfer ownership of certain assets that it had built over to CAT. In September 2019, AIS resolved another ownership spat with state-run TOT via a similar leaseback arrangement.
