Cybastion plans AI-powered data centre for Cameroon

Digital and infrastructure solutions company Cybastion says it plans to invest US$75 million in an AI-powered data centre and power plant in Cameroon, expanding the company's digital infrastructure projects across Africa.

The US company, which has a strong focus on the African market, says the digital infrastructure project is to combine a sovereign data centre with dedicated power capacity to support growing demand for computing, digital services and artificial intelligence.

Cybastion's planned digital infrastructure project advances its Digital Fast Track platform, an integrated approach to digital transformation that combines digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital solutions, reliable energy and workforce development to build secure and resilient digital ecosystems.

The US Embassy in Cameroon announced the planned investment on 27 August during the inaugural US-Cameroon Bilateral Economic and Commercial Dialogue in Douala.

The Commercial Dialogue convened US and Cameroonian government officials to establish a structured partnership to attract greater US private sector investment and strengthen Cameroon's business environment.

]The investment was part of the Embassy's announcement of US$7 billion in new and expanding American investment and trade opportunities in Cameroon.

As cloud computing and AI expand, Cybastion says its digital infrastructure project in Douala, the largest city in Cameroon, will address the interconnected needs of computing capacity and reliable power from the outset. For the moment, however, capacity, size and timeline for the new facilities do not appear to have been revealed.

This is far from the only recent Cybastion activity in West Africa. We reported in July that the Export-Import Bank of the United States had approved a new financing guarantee for Cybastion to deploy a smart border surveillance system in Ivory Coast. This approval brought EXIM's total funding guarantees for Cybastion digital transformation projects in the country to US$170 million, including support for a sovereign national data centre and the digitisation of government services.
