MTN Uganda has been granted an additional 5MHz of spectrum in the 1800MHz and 2100MHz bands.
TeleGeography reports that MTN - the largest mobile operator in the market - requested the extra spectrum in order to expand its network capacity and thereby improve quality of service (QoS).
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) agreed to the allocation on the condition that MTN would use the extra airwaves for network upgrades. The operator is expected to offer nationwide roaming on its rivals’ networks within six months, and an average data download speed of 8Mbps within 18 months.
