Albanian regulators cooperate on 700MHz spectrum issue

Albania’s telecoms regulator AKEP (Electronic and Postal Communications Authority) has signed a cooperation agreement with the country’s broadcast regulator AMA (Audiovisual Media Authority) on a number of issues including the release of 700MHz spectrum.

The regulators stated that AMA would issue the 700MHz spectrum while AKEP would oversee administration of the band. TeleGeography reports that the stated goal of the regulators is to ensure that their usage of the spectrum is in line with targets set by both the ITU and the EU.

In October 2020, the ITU called for the migration of broadcast operators from the 700MHz to be completed by the end of 2022 so that the spectrum could be reallocated to mobile network operators.

The regulators have confirmed that they also plan to set up a joint task force to monitor spectral interference and create a combined inventory of frequencies.
