The Romanian PC market continued to grow at a fast pace in 2Q08 in terms of both shipments and value, albeit not as rapidly as in previous quarters. According to the latest data from IDC, shipments grew 29.3% year on year, while the value of the market expanded year on year by 23.3%.
"We expect the consumer market to gain momentum in coming quarters, driven by the introduction of new brand models, especially low-cost notebooks that target the low-entry segment," said Diana Preda, research analyst, IDC Romania. "Demand for commercial PCs will also continue to expand, backed by exceptional results in Romania's economic growth, public investments in the government and education sectors, and organic growth in the SMB sector."
The x86 server segment grew fastest in 2Q08, expanding 49.7% year on year in volume, albeit from a small base. The notebook segment expanded 49% in volume to account for 37.9% of the total market, while the desktop segment grew 18.7% year on year. Top three vendors in 2Q08 were Dell, HP, and K-Tech. Together they were responsible for a third of total PC shipments in Romania during that period.
