Satellite communication (SATCOM) is at a turning point, with the abundance of capacity coming from High Throughput Satellites (HTS) at faster data rates and at a lower cost.

This coincides with the insatiable human desire for data connectivity spreading to the most remote regions of the globe, and the need for data to be accessible, not only from any fixed location, but also while on-the-move.

HTS Opportunity – A Game Changer

HTS will continue to have a high impact and shape the satellite industry, opening up new markets and opportunities. Today, we are seeing a growing set of SATCOM benefits in a multitude of high capacity markets that compete head on with the traditional terrestrial solutions. The lower space segment costs, and the proven business cases are coupled with the speed of deployment and reliability of satellite communication.

In order to materialize and maximize the HTS opportunity, the ground segment must be optimized and have the required flexibility. Ideally it should be built with a cloud-based distributed architecture that has been designed to meet next-generation Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization (SDN/NFV). A single platform of this nature should provide support for service expansion to any fixed or mobility market, and be enhanced with a comprehensive family of VSATs that have been designed to address the high-speed requirements and market diversity expected throughout 2016.

Data Connectivity: Everywhere, Anytime

The opportunity to realize the dream of data connectivity throughout the world, either via mobile high-data network expansion or via Internet broadband, is now closer than ever.

In order for LTE Networks to deliver on the promise of fast, high‑throughput networks, the backhauling challenge must be addressed. Satellite backhauling often brings the advantage of fast deployment compared to fiber and microwave backhauling solutions, which are both time-consuming and often not feasible when spanning long distances or difficult terrain.

Providing a terrestrial-quality user experience is key to a successful satellite backhaul implementation. A truly effective solution requires a VSAT with built-in acceleration to compensate for the inherent satellite latency. Such a solution will enable MNOs to offer a user experience indistinguishable from terrestrial.

In addition, when providing a satellite backhaul link, the question of bandwidth efficiency is crucial. To reduce OPEX, a TDM/TDMA access scheme is recommended to take advantage of the “bursty” nature of LTE traffic.

Rural Broadband Expansion

The social and economic benefits of bringing communication to remote areas is widely understood and globally appreciated. SATCOM is now attracting some of the biggest players in the market and serving to reach the most remote regions of the world.

A turnkey project is often the way to promise the highest quality network, on-time and with the best TCO. An end-to-end service with full responsibility includes three stages. First the Network Design stage provides the best technical and economical solution to cover the service requirement. The Implementation stage includes on-time deployment and the ongoing Operation stage ensures NOC and field operation according to a pre-defined service level agreement.

On-the-Move

SATCOM on-the-move is the obvious enabler for connectivity, whether on land, sea or in the air. The ground segment equipment must be designed to address mobility with features such as automatic beam switching to provide continuous coverage. In‑Flight Connectivity (IFC) is a particularly significant emerging market, and has been the catalyst for some incredible breakthrough technology. In particular, an electronically-steered array / phased-array antenna will ensure minimum mechanical failure as well as minimum size and weight.
