Nokia supplies Chunghwa with 5G small cells

Nokia bagged another contract win announcing it will supply Taiwanese operator Chunghwa Telecom a range of products from its small cell portfolio, to support the operator’s comprehensive 5G coverage.

In a statement, Nokia said Chunghwa was the first operator to deploy non-standalone small cell solution 5G targeting business and tourist districts. The vendor deployed and installed 140 5G small cells to date for the operator, which adds to the current base of 2,500 4G small cells.

The deal will also see Nokia complement the small cells by supplying its AirScale radio equipment to improve indoor coverage and capacity, and its AirScale Micro RRH to upgrade outdoor coverage.

Nokia said Chunghwa sees the enterprise market as key for 5G development, and that it is partnering with local small to medium-size enterprises to provide secure 5G coverage to enable industry 4.0 automation.

It estimated around 80 per cent of mobile sessions are activated indoors from homes and businesses, making high-quality indoor 5G coverage “pivotal to ensuring a good end-user experience.”

Max Chen, Chunghwa Telecom mobile division president, said: “This is a continuation of our innovative and ambitious approach to small cell deployment across Taiwan. We are an existing customer of Nokia’s 4G small cells portfolio and had no hesitation in also adopting their 5G products for the first wave of deployment.”

Tommi Uitto, Nokia mobile networks president, added: “We are proud to support Chunghwa Telecom in their pioneering efforts to deliver compelling 5G coverage to key indoor and outdoor locations across Taiwan. We are delighted they have chosen our small cells portfolio to achieve their ambitious strategy and looking forward to partnering with them moving forward.”
