Nokia to upgrade Zain digital infrastructure

Nokia bagged a contract to upgrade Saudi operator Zain’s digital infrastructure and enhance network capabilities across all regions in the kingdom.

The deal will see the operator’s network coverage improve and provide customers with advanced digital services with high bandwidth and low latency technologies for broadband and communication experiences.

Zaims aims to position the Saudi telecoms sector as a global leader and an enabler to the kingdom’s Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, a strategic framework to reduce the reliance on oil, diversify the economy, and boost public services.

The agreement was signed during the Leap technology event in Riyadh which is organised by the Saudi ministry of communications and information technology.

Finnish vendor Nokia will provide solutions such as its AirScale Radio, Wavence Microwave, NetAct and EdenNet Self-Organizing Networks (SON), to improve coverage and network performance.

It is also applying carrier aggregation and multiple input multiple output (mMIMO) technology approaches to enhance network capacity.

Zain CTO Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Mufda said: “This will open up new horizons for the future of technology which will be based on cloud computing services, AI services, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, smart cities, fintech and others.”

Nokia was recently tapped to provide 4G services in Jamaican operator by Rock Connect, the vendor was the sole provider selected by the new operator.
