dlocal and Western Union to enhance digital payment methods in Latin America

dLocal, a payment platform that connects global businesses with emerging markets, and international money transfer company Western Union have announced a strategic alliance to enable digital payment methods on Western Union's online platforms in Latin America.

The partners say the agreement aims to provide Western Union customers with a more agile and modern payment experience, aligned with local habits and preferences. It incorporates alternative and locally relevant payment methods – such as cards and bank transfers – into the brand’s digital channels across countries like Chile, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Argentina and Brazil, with strong potential for further regional expansion.

The companies point out that this collaboration will expand the range of payment solutions for remittance customers, granting customers greater autonomy to choose how, when and from where to manage their international money transfers, according to their preferences and needs.

Additionally, the alliance will promote the growth of the digital ecosystem in Latin America, generating new business opportunities in segments with high adoption of digital solutions.

Joaquin Moreno, dlocal's VP of Sales America, explains: "By integrating our payments network into their platform, we are facilitating not only access to local and alternative payment methods but also enabling a better remittance sending and receiving experience in Latin America."

In 2024, Latin America and the Caribbean are said to have reached a record-breaking US$161 billion in remittances, according to the Inter-American Development Bank, with nearly half of these transactions already conducted through digital platforms.

It’s been a busy few months for Uruguay-headquartered dlocal. In June it announced strategic approvals from regulatory bodies in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and the Philippines. Before this, in May, it announced what it calls an expanded relationship with financial technology company PayPal to offer businesses access to payment processing and local payment methods in more than 40 new untapped emerging markets.
