UAE operator Etisalat has announced further expansion plans for its SmartHub ecosystem of interconnected communities with the planned launch of a new facility.
This new wholesale data centre – Etisalat’s third – is to open in Kalba, offering a state-of-the-art Tier 3 data centre facility addressing growing demand and enhancing geographical diversity. Kalba is in the emirate of Sharjah on the Gulf of Oman coast, north of Oman.
The company says that the new facility leverages its partner ecosystem to enable scalable and agile infrastructure. With the new SmartHub ecosystem, Etisalat says that businesses can now manage their data in the most cost-effective way by making use of the company’s digital infrastructure and harnessing interconnection capabilities.
The opening of Etisalat’s third wholesale data centre follows the launch of facilities in Fujairah and Dubai last year. According to the Gulf News website, the new data centre will offer a geo-redundant ecosystem for global players to expand their regional presence.
Importantly, the new facility is also to be the landing place for Africa-1, the new subsea telecom system connecting Africa, the Middle East and Europe. This, says Etisalat, will give SmartHub Kalba a pivotal role in facilitating faster connectivity to various global partners.
The new facility is scheduled to be operational by the first quarter of 2022, providing what is described as a robust data centre infrastructure evolving to meet future demands including, of course, the arrival of a new generation of submarine cables. It will also becoming a disaster recovery hub for Etisalat’s customers in the Fujairah SmartHub.
