Airtel and Ericsson announce data centre launch in the Seychelles

Pan-African operator Airtel Africa and Ericsson have announced the launch of a data centre in the East African island country of the Seychelles.

This is a turnkey project intended to relocate and modernize Airtel Africa’s existing local network and core services to the new data centre.

According to Ericsson, the new data centre, which features a blend of legacy and virtualized network functions, will provide Airtel Africa with a new hybrid network cloud environment, bringing significant efficacy gains.

This hybrid network cloud environment, says Ericsson, will increase network and cost efficiency, reduce time to deploy applications, and enable developers to innovate and bring new applications to Airtel Africa subscribers quicker.

The partners are also looking to manage the evolution of voice calling. They point out that as voice over long-term evolution (VoLTE) becomes the new standard for calling throughout the world it is becoming necessary for service providers to have efficient infrastructure capable of providing VoLTE services. The virtualization and cloud-based evolution of the Airtel Africa network will, they say, prepare the service provider for VoLTE – and, eventually, 5G network infrastructure as well.

Not surprisingly, the local operator is very positive about this development. Dina Amadou, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Seychelles, says, “Our newest partnership with Ericsson…brings us one step closer to our ambition to build a world-class network.”

The operator now known as Airtel launched in Seychelles in 1998 as Telecom Seychelles and is the country’s dominant mobile service provider, serving some 65,000 mobile subscribers, according to 2018 estimates. This is the vast majority of the country’s population, which is today around 98,347.
