Data centres: new launch in Banda Aceh, development plans in Batam

There’s more data centre news from Indonesia – though the new launch and a planned development making recent headlines are not, for once, taking place in Jakarta.

Multinational telecommunications conglomerate Telkom Indonesia has launched a new data centre in Banda Aceh on the southern end of the Island of Sumatra.

This is one of the company's neuCentrIX data centres: neuCentrIX is described as a neutral-carrier data centre ecosystem and one-stop solution for colocation, cloud service and internet exchange.

This is, according to the Data Center Dynamics website, the 18th metro the neuCentrIX data centres have entered. The facility will serve government services and local internet service providers.

Meanwhile, real estate private equity firm Gaw Capital Partners has announced that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Sinar Primera, a leading Indonesian developer of new economy real estate, with the aim of developing a data centre campus in Batam, the largest city in the province of Riau Islands in Indonesia.

With Gaw Capital as the primary investor, Sinar Primera will acquire a minority shareholder stake in the property and take on the role of development manager for the project.

Phase one of the data centre campus located in Nongsa Digital Park is scheduled to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2024. This new facility will be a single-storey building offering up to 6MW of critical IT load.

The partners say that by combining Gaw Capital’s investment acumen with Sinar Primera’s expertise in property development, the project aims to deliver a cutting-edge data centre facility that meets the stringent requirements of businesses seeking reliable, scalable and secure data storage and processing capabilities.

The data centre campus in Nongsa Digital Park will enable a near-shoring strategy for data centre operators based in Singapore and fortify the ‘digital bridge’ that connects Singapore and Indonesia.
