ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) says its India unit has broken ground on its edge data centre in Jaipur, which also marks its entry into India’s edge data centre market.
According to an announcement posted on X on Friday, STT GDC said the Jaipur data centre will be an AI-ready facility that will provide high-density, low-latency connectivity to power the growth of Tier 2 cities across India.
The Jaipur facility will take up 15,300 square metre on a 1.47-acre site, and sports a designed IT capacity of 6MW.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, STT GDC India CTO Vikram Nagrani, highlighted the strategic importance of the project as the company moves into the edge data centre space in India.
STT GDC India has had its eye on the edge data centre market for some time. In a blog post in November 2023, Nagrani said that edge data centres were becoming increasingly crucial to support India’s digital growth as demand grows for compute-intensive apps that require low latency, including streaming apps, critical cloud-hosted business apps, online financial transactions and IoT.
In September, STT GDC said it will invest US$3.2 billion to expand its data centre capacity in India by 550MW, nearly tripling its IT load capacity to meet the demands of India’s digital economy over the next five to six years.
