Gabon plans new data centre with help from ST Digital

Gabon has broken ground on what is described as a landmark data centre in Nkok Special Economic Zone, a multi-sectoral industrial park 27 kilometres from Libreville.

This ambitious project, supported by the Ministry of the Digital Economy and led by pan-African digital services company ST Digital, is described as a strategic move to promote digital independence and diversify an economy traditionally reliant on resource extraction.

The data centre is expected to be operational in five months and will serve as a foundational pillar for a more resilient and modern digital ecosystem.

There appear to be few specifics about the data centre’s power or capacity, albeit the facility will offer sovereign cloud services, ensuring that all sensitive data remains within the country’s borders and that businesses in key sectors like finance, healthcare, and education will be able to operate more securely and efficiently.

Local news reports add that this new digital environment is designed to boost innovation and competitiveness, making Gabon an attractive destination for foreign investment. In addition, ST Digital’s focus on energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact aligns with Gabon’s broader sustainability goals.

A pioneer in the secure, sovereign cloud in French-speaking Africa, ST Digital is a data centre infrastructure operator in Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Togo, Congo and Gabon. Its Cote d'Ivoire project is due to launch in the last quarter of 2025.
