Malaysian telco Maxis said on Tuesday it is expanding its solar energy-as-a-service solution for households across Peninsular Malaysia, following its initial launch in 400 homes in the Klang Valley late last year.

The Maxis Home Solar offering is a subscription-based service in which solar panels and inverters are installed at the customer’s home. The package includes installation, maintenance and proactive monitoring, as well as 24/7 customer support and a 10-year warranty.

The monthly subscription fee depends on home size and electricity usage, with the solution tailored for each home’s energy consumption needs. For example, a small home requiring a 7.3-kWp solar installation would pay MYR310 (US$71.80) a month, while a large home requiring a 17.4 kWp system would pay MYR720.

That said, Maxis said customers can either pay a flat monthly fee or be billed based on actual energy usage. Regardless of solar solution size, all customers will have to pay MYR1,000 up front to install the equipment.

There’s also a premium option that promises enhanced solar panel performance, better reliability and the option to scale up the solution as power needs increase.

Maxis said the solution can help customers save up to 25% on their electricity bills, as well as provide long-term protection against rising energy costs. For instance, if the home with the a 7.3-kWp solar solution consumes between MYR500 and MYR600 worth of electricity per month, the savings could amount to between MYR110 and MYR140 (after deducting the bill charges from Maxis and power company TNB).

Maxis said it decided to expand the solar solution to all of Peninsular Malaysia starting next month after receiving positive feedback on from early adopters in the Klang Valley.

The solution expands on Maxis’ converged home offerings, leveraging its customer base of 10.4 million subscribers and 780,000 homes. While only Maxis home broadband customers can sign up for the service for now, Maxis will make the solar solution available to everyone by the end of this year, said Patrick Er, director of Maxis Green Solutions and chief people and transformation officer at Maxis.

“Our aim is to bring green energy adoption into the mainstream,” he said in a statement.
