India's Vi lost 1.43m subscribers in July; Jio, Airtel add 8.45m

Indian telecom operator Vodafone Idea (Vi) lost over 1.4 million subscribers in July 2021 whereas Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel added 6.5 million and 1.9 million subscribers, respectively, during the month, according to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Riding on the massive subscriber gains, the wireless user base of Jio swelled to 443.2 million in July. Airtel's subscriber count rose to 354 million in July. Meanwhile, Vi's subscriber count slipped to 271.9 million.

The Trai data showed that Reliance Jio's market share in terms of wireless subscribers as of July 31, 2021, was the highest at 37.34%, followed by Bharti Airtel at 29.83%. Vodafone Idea's market share reduced to 22.91%, followed by the state-run telecom operators BSNL and MTNL at 9.64% and 0.28%, respectively.

Overall telephone subscribers, comprising wireless and wireline connections, stood over 1.209 billion. This includes 670 million urban telephone subscribers and 538 million rural telephone subscribers.

According to TRAI data, the broadband subscribers, comprising wireless and wireline connections, stood at 808 million.

According to the data, all stated except Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, North East, Karnataka, Delhi and Kolkata saw growth in their wireless subscriber in July.
