Claro Perú taps iBASIS to monetise international A2P messaging

Global communications solutions provider iBasis said on Tuesday it has signed an deal with Peruvian mobile operator Claro Perú to implement its A2P messaging gateway solution.

Under the deal, iBASIS will be the exclusive gateway for aggregating all incoming international A2P SMS traffic and terminating it into Claro Perú’s network. Meanwhile, the telco will use iBASIS’s messaging managed services solution to monetise that  traffic.

Claro Perú’s corporate marketing director Mariano Orihuela Medrano said the tie-up with iBASIS is part of its ongoing commitment to expand and enhance its A2P messaging business.

“We focus on innovating and ensuring a high-quality and secure experience to push further adoption of the channel,” he said in a statement.

iBASIS COO Edwin van Ierland added that the deal enables Claro Perú to gain control over delivery of international A2P SMS traffic into their network and drive SMS revenues sustainably.

“This decision aligns with our commitment to fostering sustainable A2P messaging growth and will enable Claro Perú to leverage our multi-channel monetization capabilities, including RCS, in the future," he said.

Van Ierland cited a report from Telemedia that said A2P SMS accounted for 96.6% of total business messaging traffic in 2022, while global A2P SMS spend is expected to rise to US$35.3 billion by 2027. Polaris Market Research says the global A2P messaging will be worth almost US$105 billion by 2032.
