Smart Axiata joins Open Gateway, collaborates with Cellcard and Metfone on APIs

Cambodian telco Smart Axiata said on Thursday it has joined the GSMA Open Gateway Initiative and signed an MoU at Mobile World Congress 2025 to collaborate with rival telcos CamGSM (a.k.a. Cellcard) and Metfone on deploying federated CAMARA APIs.
The partnership aims to enhance digital security, combat fraud, enhance identify verification, and foster seamless integration of digital services across networks.
Smart Axiata said that the collaboration to integrate standardized APIs would enable fintech, e-commerce, and digital service providers in Cambodia to launch solutions more efficiently while ensuring secure transactions and user protection.
That in turn would accelerate digital service adoption and provide businesses with a robust and scalable infrastructure to expand their offerings across networks, said Smart Axiata CEO Ziad Shatara.
“This collaboration is not just about technology; it's about empowering our community through enhanced protection against fraud and fostering innovation, ensuring that every individual and business can thrive in the digital economy,” he said in a statement.
Cellcard joined the Open Gateway Initiative last year. Smart Axiata’s and Metfone’s respective parent companies – Axiata Group and Viettel – are also members.
