Vietnam-based JV to drive AI for shipping – and more

Ocean Network Express (ONE), one of the world's leading liner shipping companies, and Japanese technology group MTI have established a joint venture called Quaveo in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City.

By combining the strengths of both companies, Quaveo (a name that apparently references terms like quality, quantity, idea and evolution) aims to drive digital transformation in the container shipping industry and beyond and create new use cases for AI applications.

The JV partners say that Quaveo was jointly established to realise problem-solving and new value creation for customers, including customers in the shipping industry, by leveraging ONE’s extensive knowledge and practical experience in the container shipping industry and MTI’s know-how in AI-utilised human resource development.

Business activities will include realisation of operational improvements utilising AI, in areas such as vessel allocation plans, equipment operation and logistics processes.

Another aim will be improvement of customer satisfaction through the automation of inquiry responses by AI and the provision of personalised services tailored to customer needs,

The partners also intend to promote automation for back-office operations and routine tasks and support both the development of AI talent at client companies and the construction of sustainable digital transformation promotion systems by utilising the training know-how cultivated by MTI.

Importantly, this is not just about shipping. The company will, of course, draw on the expertise ONE and MTI have cultivated through joint AI development in the complex arena of global shipping. The partners say their core strength lies in their agility to rapidly apply cutting-edge technologies, such as generative AI and large language models (LLMs). However, leveraging these strengths, they will expand Quaveo’s services beyond the maritime industry to sectors like distribution and manufacturing.

Ichiro Igari, Managing Executive Officer, MTI Ltd, explains: "In the new company, we will create results in the container shipping and healthcare businesses and realise business transformation through the latest AI technology for a wider range of client companies."
