Malaysian telco CelcomDigi said on Wednesday it is collaborating with Google’s Firebase and Telenor Linx to boost its API-as-a-Service (APIaaS) offering for phone number verification.
Under the deal, CelcomDigi’s network API for phone number verification will be made available via the Google Firebase platform, which it said will enable developers to deliver secure, seamless and trusted digital onboarding experiences at scale.
The phone number verification API leverages telco-grade network intelligence to allow users to verify their mobile number instantly without relying on SMS one-time passwords (OTPs) when they sign up for banking, e-commerce or ride-hailing apps. Verification happens securely in the background through a trusted connection between the app and the mobile network, reducing friction while lowering the risk of scams, phishing and OTP interception.
“Authentication has become an essential part of every digital journey to combat fraud and fake accounts, yet the user experience has often been sub-optimal, while fraud has grown more sophisticated,” said Telenor Linx CEO Stig Atle Waagbø in a statement. “Withber Firebase Phone Number Verification, we reduce both friction and fraud by combining telco grade network intelligence with elegant APIs.”
CelcomDigi chief innovation officer T. Kugan said the initiative with Firebase and Telenor Linx builds on its ongoing efforts to expand its API ecosystem and support safer digital services via partnerships such as Aduna, Bridge Alliance and PayNet.
“By offering APIaaS, we enable enterprises and developers to integrate secure, network-led phone number verification into their applications, making digital onboarding simpler, safer and more reliable for end users,” he said.
CelcomDigi has also teamed with rival telcos Maxis, U Mobile, Telekom Malaysia and YTL Communications to launch a federated network service via the GSMA Open Gateway initiative to help online businesses combat fraud and digital identity theft.
