Axian and Mastercard launch digital payments suite in five African countries

Axian Group says it has formed a strategic collaboration agreement with Mastercard to launch digital payment solutions in the five African markets where Axian operates mobile networks: Madagascar, Comoros Islands, Senegal, Togo, and Tanzania.

Under the agreement announced on Thursday, the two companies will introduce virtual and physical cards, as well as merchant solutions, under Axian’s Mixx and MVola brands in those five markets, where Axian currently operates under the "Yas" brand.

Consumers can use their Mixx and MVola apps to activate and top up their virtual card, instantly access live exchange rates and monitor or cancel transactions in real time. Axian said these features make international payments easier, faster and safer.

Erwan Gelebart, CEO of Axian Group’s digibank and fintech cluster, said the solutions will enable millions of consumers, SMEs and entrepreneurs to pay and be paid via mobile phones, which will also strengthen the digital ecosystems in those markets.

“Through this collaboration with Mastercard, we are giving our customers the tools they need to thrive in today’s interconnected world, whether it is for shopping, for sending money across borders or for managing their business securely from a mobile app.".  Gelebart said in a statement.

“This partnership is a reinforcement of how we are enabling simple and secure ways to make payments and move money,” added Mete Guney, executive VP of market development for EEMEA at Mastercard. “We remain committed to working with innovative players like Axian to drive financial inclusion and accelerate the growth of the continent’s digital economy.”

Axian rebranded its mobile units in Madagascar, Comoros Islands, Senegal, Togo, and Tanzania to Yas in November 2024 in a bid to unify its operations and create synergies for future growth. As part of that strategy, Axian rebranded its financial services in Senegal, Togo and Tanzania to "Mixx by Yas".
